Abby Utley’s Preparation Process for Multi-Character Audiobooks

Narrating a book with multiple characters presents its own set of challenges, and Abby takes a methodical approach to get it just right:

“First, I read the book to get familiar with it,” she explains. “Then I focus on all the little character details that can give me insight into their personalities.” One of the aspects that makes Abby’s process stand out is her ability to collaborate directly with the author. “I’m really lucky with Ranger Ryder and the Roughneck because I get to talk with Billy, the author, and bounce things off of her. It’s a great way to get an understanding of what works,” she says. But the process doesn’t stop there. For Abby, it’s also about testing her voices. “A lot of times what I hear in my head isn’t exactly what gets captured on the audio,” she admits. “I’ll test out each voice and make sure it’s what I want, then refer to that test along the way.” This attention to detail ensures that every character is brought to life in the best possible way.
